So, I hiked Half Dome. 17 mile round-trip from the trail head with about 5,000 feet of elevation gain to the top. The last 400 feet of the trip are basically up the steepest grade possible without it actually being climbing. You literally have to pull yourself up on steel cables. It’s scary as hell, but totally worth the view!
The best part of this whole ordeal was what happened when I finally got to the top (in about 3.5 hours because I was booking it). I was just casually sitting there, taking it all in, when just a few feet away Alex Honnold comes climbing over the Northwest Face. I died. It was unbelievable. I had no idea he was even in the park, let alone free soloing Half Dome. If you don’t know who this dude is, Google him. He’s nuts, but amazing. He has been featured on 60 Minutes and the show Superhumans and set all kinds of climbing records. The crazy thing is that he does all of his climbing without ropes, aka free soloing. One slip and this guy is dead. It’s ridiculous. Anyway, that was definitely one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me.
